If you’re having a builder construct your custom built home you will be making plenty of decisions when choosing amenities and finishes.  One of these is plumbing fixtures for your bathrooms.  In recent years new technologies have allowed manufacturers to produce plumbing fixtures that are not only beautiful but are also durable and long lasting. They have also added an array of countless new designs and finishes.

Bathroom Faucets

Make your bathrooms stylish by adding modern bathroom faucets that incorporate your personal style and preferences with high function.  Here are a few options to consider when choosing faucets for your custom built home:

Styles.  The market is rich with choices, from antique and rustic to modern and sleek and everything in between. There are plenty of choices to match just about any home décor.

Sink Faucets

Consider the design and size of your sink when choosing a sink faucet. Most plumbing fixture manufacturers categorize their products into style lines that will help you match plumbing fixtures with any type of sink, tub or shower. Use pre-matched ideas to show you what plumbing fixtures would look best in your space.

Sink faucets typically can be categorized into 4 main types as follows:

• 8-inch spread (also called wide-spread)
• 4-inch spread
• Single hole (also called single control lever handle)
• Wall mount

Handles -single or double handles. For double handles choose either lever handles or cross handles.

Tub Faucets

Tub and whirlpool faucets (tub fillers) come in as many designs and finishes as sink faucets.  It’s recommended that your sink and tub faucets come from the same designer lines and matching finishes.

Shower Fixtures

Shower heads come in all shapes, sizes and options, they include single or multi-function units.

• Single function units provide a straightforward shower and are usually easier to clean.
• Multi-function shower heads come with a variety of settings (examples include wide sprays, concentrated sprays and massage sprays).

Hand held shower heads, rain heads and wall mounted body sprays also offer a wide range of innovative functions, styles and finishes.

Quality

Choose fixtures that are constructed with metal internal mechanical working parts. These will be a bit pricier than plastic parts, but will give you many more years of reliable service. The highest-quality fixtures are made with solid forged or machined brass, which will last the longest and require the least care. Cast brass is also used, but it is not quite as durable.

Battaglia Homes wins Gold Key Awards three straight years

The Home Builders Association of Greater Chicago presented Battaglia Homes with two 2012 Gold Key Awards for custom built homes in Hinsdale. What’s distinctive is that the awards were the latest in a string of three years of top honors for the custom builder.

Each year the Home Builders Association of Greater Chicago (HBAGC) presents one of the premier housing programs in the country: “The Key Awards,” which signify quality in home building and remodeling. HBAGC has been honoring the area’s best since 1972 in such categories as new home construction, architectural design, room additions, interior design, green building and more.

Autumn Home Maintenance Tips - by Battaglia Homes

Autumn is a beautiful time of the year, it’s also a reminder that old man winter is right around the corner. Here are some maintenance tips to help prepare your home for the winter months ahead.

-Check caulking around the exterior of windows and doors. If caulk is cracking or has broken away it should be replaced. You should also check the inside of your home for drafts around window and door seams.  An inexpensive solution to prevent drafts and save on heating bills is to apply weather stripping around these areas. Weather stripping can be purchased at local home improvement centers.

-Clean and inspect gutters and downspouts, this is especially important to do in the fall due to autumn leaves. Clearing leaves and debris will keep water flowing properly and help prevent clogged gutters and ice dams.

-Inspect exterior flashing for gaps and separation, these may need to be caulked and sealed.

-Detach garden hoses from spigots, this will prevent water from freezing and cracking spigots.

-Have your heating system inspected, ducts should be cleaned, air filters and humidifier water panels should be replaced. A properly running heating system improves efficiency and ensures your home stays warm through those cold winter months. Consider installing programmable thermostats for greater efficiency.

-Change the direction of your ceiling fan’s rotation in the winter so that the blades force cooler air towards the ceiling – this will displace warm air that naturally rises forcing it down to your living areas.

-Have your fireplace, chimney and dryer vent professionally inspected and cleaned at least once a year.

-Change batteries on smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors at least every six months.

Performing maintenance on your home will help protect your home for the winter, help avoid costly emergency repairs and will save you energy and money.
